GENERAL ASSIGNMENT REPORTER
Description
Mountain View Publishing, a subsidiary of Great West Newspapers, has an opening for an experienced reporter at its Olds Albertan weekly newspaper located in Olds, Alberta. This award-winning newspaper averages 24 pages a week and focuses on everything local in the two towns it covers. Reporting to the editor of this two-person newsroom, the reporter is responsible for generating story ideas and taking assignments from the editor in a variety of beats that include municipal council, sports, community, features, and police. Olds has a college, an RCMP detachment, a number of schools and a multitude of community organizations that the reporter will have to mine for stories. While there is a full-time photographer on staff, the reporter is required to supplement coverage with tight and bright photos. The reporter is also responsible for using the web and social media to keep our readers informed.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will: • be a highly capable interviewer • have the demonstrated ability to write clean, interesting, appropriately structured articles • be capable of shooting publishable photos • meet stringent deadlines • work independently as well as part of a team • have weekly newspaper experience • have a reliable vehicle • be willing to relocate
