Lakeland THIS WEEK and LakelandTODAY Cold Lake:
REPORTER (LJI)

Description
Lakeland This Week/LakelandToday.ca has an opening for a reporter on our regional news team. Based in Cold Lake in northeastern Alberta, the successful candidate will contribute local news content to our print publication and news website.

This is a one-year Local Journalism Initiative funded position offering a competitive salary and opportunity to pursue permanent employment with Great West Media upon completion of this position.

Hyperlocal journalism is our focus and applicants should possess a keen news sense combined with a willingness to report on a broad spectrum of beats including municipal government, provincial and federal affairs as they relate to local residents, education, industry and economic development, environment, Indigenous issues, health care and policing.

This opportunity is well-suited to someone who works well independently but who will also be expected to work cohesively with a regional news team.

Cold Lake has city status in Alberta’s Lakeland region with over 15,000 people living in the urban centre and several more thousand living in the rural area surrounding it. The city has a young population with an average age of 32 years.

The area is on the cusp of rapid development with 4 Wing Cold Lake prepping for the arrival of F-35 jet fighters. The site is the busiest Canadian Forces fighter base in Canada and is a major contributor to the local economy. The natural resources sector is also an important economic contributor. A proposal for a massive carbon-capture project in the area could have significant economic impact. There is much to be written about in this community.

Situated on the shores of Cold Lake, there are boundless outdoor recreational opportunities available both on and off the water - from fishing and sailing in the summer to downhill skiing at Kinosoo Ridge Resort in the winter or testing your skill in the newly opened Aerial Adventure Park. The impressive Energy Centre offers year-round recreation and fitness programs.
 Qualified candidates require:
• Journalism diploma or degree / post-secondary equivalencies in English/Communications among others will be considered.

• Applicants must possess excellent written and oral communication skills with a clear understanding of Canadian Press style.

• Photography skills

• A driver’s licence and reliable vehicle is necessary

This position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
