Western Wheel recognized in Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association’s Better Newspapers Competition.

The Western Wheel continued its winning ways in this year’s Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association’s Better Newspapers Competition.

After winning awards in all General Excellence categories, the Wheel won three more awards in writing and photography categories.

Brent Calver won first place in Spot News Photography for his photo of a STARS air ambulance landing on Highway 2 following a collision in February.

The team at the Wheel won first place in Best Special Section for Foothills Magazine, which is published three times a year.

Editor Ted Murphy won third place for Best Local Editorial for an opinion piece titled ‘Something smells with large-scale project.’

Previously, the Western Wheel won awards in all General Excellence categories. The newspaper was awarded Best Front Page and Best Editorial Page as well as second place for Best Sports Coverage and Best Overall.

The awards are judged by a committee composed of independent publishers from outside Alberta.
